Why TIG?

A short while ago, someone on a mailing list I frequent asked "Why TIG?". In context, he was asking why TIG is preferred over other forms of welding, such as MIG. The above picture illustrates one of the reasons. Keep in mind, I'm basically a rank amateur when it comes to welding...

Why is TIG so much simpler than other forms of welding? And is TIG easier than MIG? I was under the impression that MIG welding was easier than TIG--in fact, that TIG welding required *more* skill than even straight arc welding...

I'm told that TIG requires more skill than MIG. However, there are somethings you just can't do with MIG... like very small, thin materials. Also, its harder to make "bad welds" with TIG... if it looks good, it probably is good (so I'm told).

All thats really required for a good TIG weld is a steady hand and a bit of practice.
